What is Coaching?

'A two-way process, which harnesses and develops a person's talents
in the pursuit of specific goals'

Coaching can be defined by how it works.

  • Coaching is a solution-focused, specific and proactive approach to support people in defining and achieving their goals and aspirations.
  • Coaching is based on a partnership in which one person (the coach) facilitates a move towards the goal, while the other (the coachee) explores the options available for creative solutions.
  • Strong coaching partnerships help individuals to break free of self-imposed limits, become clearer about their goals and more determined and likely to make things happen.
  • Coaching is designed to enhance performance. It does this with questions, which generate insight and new options, and an interactive style, which motivates the coachee to act.
  • Regular coaching helps people maintain performance in the long term, which adds incrementally to overall performance.

Coaching can also be defined by what it is NOT

  • It is not training:
Coaches utilise their own and coachees' prior training in pursuit of coaching goals. A coach is essentially a facilitator rather than a teacher.
  • It is not counselling:
Coaches do not assist individuals to work through the causes of personal crises and problems. However, coaches raise self-awareness in a way that allows individuals to overcome personal barriers.
  • It is not restricted to mentoring:
Mentors are usually more experienced people, able to sponsor, guide and pass on the benefits of their experience to others.
The potential of coaching can be suggested by the range of its applications

Coaching can have a dynamic impact on performance and fulfilment in fields as diverse as business, sales, sport, relationships, creativity and personal development.
